The US Army has ordered 1,600 BiNOD systems from Photonis Defense, marking an important production milestone for its effort to field a cost-effective binocular night-vision capability.Designed for helmet mounting, the BiNOD system is intended to help soldiers operate in low-light environments by intensifying the limited light available around them. The binocular configuration is aimed at improving nighttime observation while maintaining a practical form factor for individual troops.Deliveries are scheduled to start before the end of 2026, with most of the systems expected to arrive during the following year.The purchase comes from a March 2026 contract that carries a potential ceiling of $352.6 million. Details of the current production order, including its value, have not been disclosed.The latest step takes BiNOD beyond the development and testing stage and into Low-Rate Initial Production. This phase allows the Army and manufacturer to validate manufacturing, quality, and performance before deciding whether to expand production.Photonis Defense will conduct final assembly and testing in the United States. Its parent company, Exosens, will provide the image-intensifier tubes required for the devices.The procurement is part of a wider expansion in Exosens’ imaging business. The company is increasing thermal-imaging production to meet rising demand for compact sensors used in drones and counter-UAS systems.Its technology portfolio is also supporting European defense programs. BROLIS has chosen Exosens to supply thousands of image-intensifier tubes for Czech military night-vision equipment.Meanwhile, Exosens is involved in the European Defence Fund’s SPIRIT project, which seeks to improve infrared detector technology and create a more integrated European production base.As a result, the BiNOD production order adds momentum to the company’s growing involvement in both US and European military imaging programs.
