Dstl Advances Infrared Detector to Help British Troops See Through Battlefield ObscurantsBritish researchers are developing a new sensing technology designed to improve battlefield visibility when soldiers face smoke, dust, and other forms of obscuration.The technology is being developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, working with Amethyst Research and Lancaster University. The project brings together three technologies to create a detector intended to identify infrared signals that could otherwise be difficult to detect.Obscurants can significantly reduce visibility during military operations. Smoke and dust can interfere with traditional observation systems and make it harder for personnel to identify objects, vehicles, or potential threats. The new technology aims to improve detection in these challenging conditions.The detector incorporates a thin absorber layer that helps reduce unwanted thermal interference. This allows the system to detect weaker infrared signals while maintaining a high level of precision.By reducing the impact of unwanted heat, the technology could provide clearer information to soldiers operating in environments where conventional visual systems are less effective.
