Germany has awarded Rheinmetall Electronics a contract worth 1.04 billion euros ($1.2 billion) for additional Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System kits, known as IdZ-ES. The order includes 237 platoon systems and modernization packages for existing equipment. Once delivered, the kits will support around 8,600 troops and raise total platoon systems supplied under the program to 353, with about 12,000 individual soldier sets overall. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2029. The IdZ-ES program is designed to digitally connect mounted and dismounted forces. Each platoon package contains 35 soldier systems that include protective equipment, optics, communications tools, navigation gear, and weapon accessories. These are linked through a command-and-control computing network managed by unit leaders. The upgraded architecture improves data sharing between soldiers and platforms such as Boxer armored vehicles and Puma infantry fighting vehicles, with future links to aerial assets. Germany’s latest purchase follows a 2025 framework agreement worth up to 3.1 billion euros running through 2030. Rheinmetall noted that more than 30 subcontractors are involved, highlighting the industrial scale of the program and Berlin’s continued investment in digitally networked land forces.
