Leonardo has launched the 120mm L55 advanced smoothbore tank gun, setting new benchmarks in range and velocity. This company-funded innovation employs a longer barrel and enhanced metallurgy, enabling it to safely withstand higher internal pressure and accommodate multiple NATO-standard munitions. Notably, the cannon is complemented with the 120mm Vulcano guided round, extending effective range to 30km for function-kill missions.
While Italian military units will adopt the new L55 for their Panther KF51 and ARIETE C2 tanks, the German Army will utilize a slightly different L55A1 model for its own vehicles. According to defense engineers, the new gun and ammunition combination allows for variable target engagement and precision, even at extended distances, reflecting the ongoing evolution in European armored warfare.
