The Netherlands is significantly strengthening its ground-based air defense posture through a major acquisition of Rheinmetall’s Skyranger systems. Under the agreement, Rheinmetall Air Defence will deliver a fleet of mobile and stationary Skyranger units beginning in 2028, with much of the program’s value generated within the Dutch defense industry. The systems will form a key element of the Netherlands’ layered air defense network, protecting both military forces and critical national infrastructure. Skyranger’s modular turret combines advanced radar and electro-optical sensors with a high-rate 30mm cannon and missile launchers compatible with multiple interceptor types. Its command system enables rapid threat detection and engagement, particularly against small drones and cruise missiles. Looking ahead, Rheinmetall plans to integrate directed-energy weapons, enhancing cost-effective counter-UAS capabilities. The acquisition reflects lessons from Ukraine and the Middle East, where drone warfare has become a dominant challenge.
