Thailand is considering acquiring India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in its anti-ship configuration as part of efforts to strengthen the Royal Thai Navy’s maritime deterrence capabilities. The potential procurement would support Bangkok’s objective of developing a more independent force posture capable of protecting coastal areas and strategically important sea routes without relying heavily on external military partners. Discussions follow a defense meeting in Bangkok in June, where India and Thailand agreed to expand cooperation in defense manufacturing after strengthening bilateral relations in 2025. Thailand’s interest reportedly reflects operational requirements and its long-standing policy of strategic hedging rather than a direct effort to counter China. Bangkok maintains strong economic ties with Beijing while also purchasing Chinese military equipment and maintaining security relationships with the US and other suppliers. For India, a Thai BrahMos deal would further expand its defense export presence in Southeast Asia, following deliveries to the Philippines and ongoing discussions with Indonesia, Vietnam, and the UAE.
