Leonardo’s C-27J multi-mission tactical transport aircraft, which has logged over 270,000 flight hours globally, is set to expand its footprint with a new operator. Leonardo will deliver two C-27J aircraft configured for multi-mission and firefighting roles to Aramco for use in cargo transport, firefighting, oil spill response, and medical evacuation in Saudi Arabia. Operated by Mukamalah Aviation Company, Aramco’s aviation arm trading as Aloula Aviation, the aircraft will also be supported by a dedicated service center. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.
Aloula Aviation marks the 20th global operator of the C-27J, bringing total orders to 95. This is the first time a civilian customer has selected the C-27J in a multi-mission and firefighting configuration, demonstrating the aircraft’s adaptability and its growing relevance in the Middle East. Leonardo continues to invest in expanding the platform’s capabilities, including advanced avionics and performance upgrades, enabling it to meet evolving operational demands.
This contract also strengthens Leonardo’s relationship with Aramco, building on their successful partnership in helicopter operations supporting Saudi Arabia’s energy and emergency sectors.
The C-27J Next Generation Fire Fighter features the MAFFS II system—a transportable, roll-on/roll-off firefighting module that can be installed in under 90 minutes. It carries up to 7,500 liters of water or retardant, which can be refilled in less than 10 minutes. Highly maneuverable and capable of Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) from unprepared runways, the C-27J can reach remote or inaccessible fire zones quickly, where other aircraft may not be able to operate. Its adaptable drop patterns, high-speed capabilities, and versatility make it a cost-effective and sustainable solution not only for firefighting but also for disaster response and fire prevention.
