Chinese researchers have unveiled a so-called “smart surface” technology capable of harvesting usable electrical energy from ambient electromagnetic waves while simultaneously supporting communication and sensing functions. The concept integrates advanced communications technology with electromagnetic engineering, targeting applications in intelligent stealth platforms, next-generation 6G networks, and electronic warfare. Designed as an all-in-one architecture, the surface combines energy harvesting, wireless data transfer, and signal processing in a self-sustaining system resistant to jamming. The researchers suggest the technology could enable stealth aircraft to draw power from hostile radar emissions rather than merely evading them, while also coordinating data exchange across multiple platforms. Potential applications extend to satellites, self-powered sensors, and adaptive communication nodes.
