During a landmark visit by the Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria, both nations made significant strides in deepening bilateral cooperation across defense, economic development, and food security. On November 12, a series of agreements were signed, cementing the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.

A key highlight of the visit was India’s formal offer of the LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jet to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), aimed at boosting Nigeria’s air combat capabilities. To support this initiative, India has extended a USD 200 million Line of Credit, enabling Nigeria to procure the Tejas Mk1A from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The Nigerian Air Force is actively looking to replace its ageing fleet of Chengdu F-7NI fighter jets, which have become obsolete amid evolving aerial warfare requirements. The Tejas Mk1A—an advanced, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft—represents a modern and cost-effective alternative, reflecting India’s strong commitment to defense collaboration and capacity building in Nigeria.
