“Three weeks after a conflict with arch-rival Pakistan, India’s defense minister gave the green light on Tuesday to a project to build a prototype of an advanced fighter jet, the most recent attempt to increase domestic arms manufacturing.
In light of its conflicts with nuclear-armed Pakistan and China, India, one of the largest arms importers in the world, has prioritized the modernization of its military.
According to a release from the ministry, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh gave his approval to the prototype of the fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), which he described as a “significant push towards enhancing India’s indigenous defense capabilities.”
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) of India, a governmental organization under the Ministry of Defense that is in charge of aircraft design, is “set to execute the program through industry partnership,” it continued.
