Japan has taken delivery of its first batch of Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, significantly enhancing the long-range strike capabilities of its F-35A fighter fleet. The missiles were handed over in Norway and transported to Japan by a Japan Air Self-Defense Force aircraft. Designed specifically for integration with F-35 platforms, the JSM can be carried internally, preserving the aircraft’s stealth profile. With a range of up to 563 kilometers and advanced guidance systems combining GPS, inertial navigation, and imaging infrared targeting, the missile offers high precision against both land and maritime targets. The acquisition is part of Japan’s broader defense modernization strategy and follows multiple procurement agreements since 2019. The JSM’s growing adoption among allied nations highlights its effectiveness as a next-generation stand-off weapon.
