South Korean defense firm KAI has confirmed a new contract with the Philippines for 12 FA-50 light combat jets, valued at $700 million. This follows a March incident where one of the Philippines’ earlier FA-50s went missing during a military operation.
The new fleet will be delivered by 2030 and is said to feature improved capabilities, such as refueling in mid-air, advanced radar systems, and enhanced weapon loadouts for multiple combat scenarios. The Philippine side has not yet formally acknowledged the deal.
The country previously acquired 12 FA-50 jets in 2014, making this the second major procurement of the type. The recent crash during a mission in southern Mindanao underscores the risks faced by the fleet and the importance of equipment modernization.
