KNDS has contracted Rolls-Royce to deliver more than 300 mtu MB 873 Ka-501 propulsion systems to modernize and sustain Leopard 2 main battle tanks across five European nations: Germany, Lithuania, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. Deliveries by Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division are set to commence in 2026, aligning with a broader surge in government-driven demand for high-performance military engines. The MB 873 Ka-501 is a proven 12-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine producing around 1,500 horsepower, enabling the Leopard 2 to reach speeds of approximately 70 km/h and operate at ranges up to 340 km. The new order underscores Europe’s increased investment in armored capability, life-cycle sustainment, and readiness as regional security challenges intensify.
