Saab is assessing the integration of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) onto its JAS 39 Gripen fighter as a cost-effective response to drone threats. Drawing lessons from Ukraine, where relatively inexpensive unmanned systems are frequently countered with costly missiles, the company is evaluating how to equip both Gripen C and Gripen E variants with laser-guided 70mm rockets. The APKWS, typically deployed via multi-rocket pods, offers a cheaper interception method compared to traditional air-to-air missiles. Saab is also examining multi-munition carriage solutions that would allow more weapons per hardpoint, increasing drone engagement capacity per mission. The initiative comes amid renewed discussions about potentially transferring Gripen aircraft to Ukraine, although earlier plans were paused to prioritize F-16 deliveries.
