The UK Ministry of Defence has signed a five-year, £7.8 million ($10 million) contract with Serco to deliver maintenance and logistics support for the EJ200 engines powering the Royal Air Force’s Eurofighter Typhoon fleet. Previously handled via subcontracting through Rolls-Royce, the deal establishes a direct service arrangement between Serco and the RAF. Maintenance will continue at RAF Coningsby and RAF Lossiemouth, supporting 26 technical and logistics roles. The EJ200 engine, jointly developed by Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, Avio Aero, and ITP Aero, generates 90 kilonewtons (20,232 pounds) of thrust per unit, allowing the Typhoon to achieve sustained supersonic flight without afterburners. Incorporating advanced health-monitoring systems, each engine can operate for up to 1,200 hours before unscheduled maintenance. The Typhoon, in service since 2003, remains a cornerstone of UK air defense and NATO readiness. It performs air superiority, interception, and quick reaction alert missions. The Serco contract is expected to streamline maintenance processes, reduce downtime, and ensure continuous readiness for Britain’s frontline fighter squadrons.
