Korea Aerospace Industries has unveiled the first mass-produced KF-21 Boramae fighter, marking a major milestone in South Korea’s long-term effort to develop an indigenous combat aircraft. The program, initiated over two decades ago, moved into development in 2015, followed by a prototype rollout in 2021 and its first flight in 2022. After completing more than 1,600 flight tests, mass production began in 2024, with operational deployment scheduled for September 2026 following final verification. Designed to replace aging F-4 and F-5 fleets, the KF-21 features twin Hanwha Aerospace/General Electric F414 engines, enabling speeds up to Mach 1.8 and extended operational range. The aircraft integrates advanced avionics, weapons systems, and multi-role capabilities, including air-to-air, air-to-ground, and anti-ship missions. This milestone reflects South Korea’s strategic shift toward defense self-reliance and positions the KF-21 as a competitive platform in the global fighter market.
