Teledyne FLIR Defense is set to equip Bulgaria’s Stryker infantry carriers with reconnaissance and surveillance kits under a $32-million, three-year US Army contract.
The suite combines the TacFLIR 280-HDEP EO/IR system, Ranger R20SS long-range radar, and the Cameleon command software to detect, identify, and track potential threats. Production will occur across Teledyne facilities in the US and Canada, followed by delivery and installation in Bulgaria.
Later in the program, unmanned aerial systems integrated with nuclear, biological, and chemical sensors will provide standoff identification for the Bulgarian Land Forces. The program supports the country’s broader effort to replace its Soviet-era fleet with nearly 200 Strykers, more than half being infantry carriers.
Dr. JihFen Lei highlighted that the initiative will improve NATO interoperability, situational awareness, and overall force effectiveness. The TacFLIR 280-HDEP functions across diverse weather and terrain conditions, while the Ranger R20SS tracks multiple targets up to 20 kilometers. The Cameleon software allows seamless integration of these capabilities with minimal hardware changes.
