Following a 2023 defense strategic review, Australia expedited the acquisition of the HIMARS system, a “game changer” mobile long-range US rocket system that Ukraine has employed with devastating effectiveness against Russian forces. The review recommended a shift toward long-range deterrence, citing worries about the vulnerability of Australia’s connections to its trade partners and international supply chains as a result of China’s fast military development.
