The US Army has successfully conducted live-fire trials of a new proximity-fused 30×113mm round from an AH-64 Apache, aimed at improving counter-drone capabilities. During testing, the helicopter fired the XM1225 Aviation Proximity Explosive cartridge against aerial targets at varying distances, validating its precision and lethality. The evaluation compared the new round directly with the legacy M789 HEDP ammunition under identical conditions. Initial results show the XM1225 met all accuracy requirements and proved highly effective against both air and ground threats. Developed at Picatinny Arsenal with proximity-fuse technology from DEVCOM and production support from Northrop Grumman, the round requires no modifications to the Apache’s M230 Chain Gun system. Its ability to detonate near targets increases lethality against drones, exposed personnel, and small maritime craft, enabling rapid integration across existing fleets.
