To replace its outdated AAV-7 platforms and improve the protected projection capabilities of the Marine Corps, the Spanish Navy will purchase 34 new Amphibious Combat Vehicles (VACIM). The Spanish government authorized this project as a component of the Industrial and Technological Plan for Security and Defense, which seeks to allocate 2% of GDP to defense spending. The Ministry of Industry has allocated €50 million for the program this year, but a proposed royal decree grants €150 million in pre-financing to expedite the implementation of various modernization initiatives, such as the VACIM. As early as page 2, the decree, which establishes the framework for providing direct assistance to the defense industry, mentions the VACIM program under the name “Efficient Comprehensive Amphibious Projection System.” It describes the purchase of 34 amphibious 8×8 vehicles in four variants. As the main surface projection asset from sea to land, this system is designed to provide the Navy’s Amphibious Force with a contemporary armored vehicle that has excellent mobility and protection, as further described on page 14. The planned variations consist of two ambulances, two recovery vehicles, two command vehicles, and twenty-eight troop transport vehicles. The purchase also includes the development of essential infrastructure, training programs, simulation systems, and initial logistical support.
