France and NATO Prepare for New Long-Range Loitering Munition Capability
The new long-range loitering munition (MTO-LP) is being developed to meet the operational demands of France and NATO allies. With a range spanning several hundred kilometres and potential for further extension, the system is engineered for rapid deployment by just two operators within 30 minutes. Up to ten munitions can be launched simultaneously, enabling coordinated strike operations. This adaptable solution is platform-agnostic, offering high safety standards while minimizing transport, storage, and logistical burdens, particularly in active theatres.
The MTO-LP is specifically optimised for long-range precision strikes. Its phased development targets initial operational capability by 2026, with plans to produce 1,000 warheads annually. Advanced upgrades in 2027 will introduce countermeasure capabilities, expanded mission flexibility, and new warhead types for deep-strike missions. Initial flight testing is set for summer 2025.
The collaboration between Thales and Boreal not only reinforces France’s defence technology base but also supports Boreal’s industrial expansion and opens the door to further partnerships in Belgium.
