The German Armed Forces have approved the procurement of eight MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aerial systems from General Atomics to enhance the navy’s long-range maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Valued at approximately €1.52 billion, the program will be financed through a combination of special defense funds and the regular military budget. Initial deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028, with the aircraft to be operated by Naval Air Wing 3 at Nordholz. The contract includes spare parts and flight crew training for an initial two-year period, with upgrades planned to enable full ASW capability by the early 2030s. With endurance of up to 30 hours, the MQ-9B will complement Germany’s manned P-8A Poseidon fleet by providing persistent coverage and data-sharing across naval and allied platforms.
