The European Defence Agency (EDA) has selected Survey Copter to conduct a study and development effort for a new hybrid unmanned aircraft capable of performing a wide range of military missions across European airspace. The project is part of the Multi-Mission Unmanned Aircraft System initiative and will focus on evaluating the design and operational potential of a versatile drone platform derived from Airbus’ Capa-X unmanned aerial system. According to project details, the aircraft is expected to support multiple operational roles including surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, aerial payload transport, and automated in-flight refueling. The program aims to examine how a single adaptable unmanned system could perform diverse tasks for European armed forces, reducing the need for multiple specialized platforms. The study phase will run for approximately 48 months and has been allocated a budget of about 1.1 million euros, equivalent to roughly $1.2 million. Survey Copter, a subsidiary of Airbus, will lead the technical analysis and conceptual design work, drawing on the capabilities of the Capa-X platform as the baseline architecture. The initiative reflects growing interest among European defense organizations in developing flexible unmanned systems that can address evolving operational requirements. By focusing on a multi-mission drone capable of handling surveillance, electronic warfare, and logistical support tasks, the EDA hopes to identify new approaches to improving interoperability and efficiency across European defense forces.
