Hanwha Defence Australia has finalized a significant contract with Electro Optic Systems (EOS) to supply Remote Weapon Systems for the ADF’s LAND 400 Phase 3 program, focusing on the AS21 Redback IFVs. Valued at 108 million Australian dollars ($71 million), the agreement covers system delivery, training, spare parts, and technical documentation over multiple years. The R400 Remote Weapon System, optimized for integration with Redback vehicles, provides 30mm firepower traditionally associated with heavier platforms, with flexibility for single or dual-weapon configurations. In addition to the main cannon, it supports machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, and anti-tank guided missiles, and is compatible with other EOS weapon systems through plug-and-play functionality. Production is centralized at EOS’ Canberra facility, leveraging an extensive Australian supply chain comprising over 100 companies. Australia procured 129 Redback IFVs in 2023 to modernize its armored fleet, replacing the older M113AS4 personnel carriers. System deliveries are slated to commence in 2027 and continue into 2028, with training, spares, and sustainment services extending to 2029. The contract reinforces Australia’s commitment to locally supported defense manufacturing while enhancing IFV operational capability.
