Germany’s armed forces have awarded Rheinmetall a major framework contract for the FV-014 autonomous reconnaissance and strike drone, signaling a major expansion in loitering munition capability. The agreement is valued at roughly 300 million euros, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2027 after qualification is completed in the second quarter of 2026. The contract also includes an option for a five-figure number of additional drones, indicating potentially large-scale future procurement. The FV-014 is a loitering munition that combines surveillance and strike functions in a single platform. It has an operational range of up to 100 kilometers and carries a 4-kilogram warhead capable of penetrating 600 millimeters of rolled homogeneous armor. Designed and manufactured entirely within the European Union, the drone can remain airborne for as long as 70 minutes while searching for targets before attack. Electric propulsion gives it a quieter and lower-signature approach profile. A secure data link enables operators to identify, monitor, and if necessary abort engagements in real time. The system is designed to operate under electronic warfare conditions and can function without GPS. It may also be deployed in swarms to overwhelm enemy air defenses or strike multiple targets simultaneously. Launch options include ground vehicles and naval platforms, with likely targets ranging from armored vehicles and artillery systems to command posts.
