Malaysia and South Korea have signed a new defense cooperation agreement to boost collaboration in weapons development, co-production, and force modernization.
The deal provides a direct government-to-government structure for Malaysia’s ongoing defense transformation, focusing on fighter aircraft, naval platforms, and missile systems.
It also paves the way for shared research initiatives and joint defense exports to third countries.
South Korea’s DAPA described the agreement as the product of deep mutual trust and noted that Malaysia has signed only one other defense pact of this nature.
Seoul expressed its commitment to helping Malaysia strengthen its military and contribute to regional stability.
Bilateral defense cooperation began in 1993 with the delivery of K200 vehicles, followed by a $920-million FA-50 light combat aircraft contract in 2023.
