Germany has inaugurated a dedicated research facility focused on countering unauthorized and potentially hostile drones around airports, major events, and critical infrastructure. The center is located at the former Cochstedt airport in Saxony-Anhalt and will operate under the German Aerospace Center, which has already used the site for unmanned aircraft research. The facility will provide realistic environments for testing technologies that detect, identify, track, and neutralize drones. It expands the agency’s National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and is expected to support research by government organizations and industry partners. The initiative follows growing concern over drone security after an aircraft carrying explosives and a detonator was discovered near Leipzig/Halle Airport. The incident prompted increased attention to the vulnerability of major logistics hubs and other sensitive facilities. Germany is also strengthening its federal police counter-drone capabilities. Officials emphasize that drone threats are evolving rapidly as systems become more autonomous and harder to identify. Continuous development and testing of detection and countermeasure technologies will therefore remain important to protecting German infrastructure and public spaces.
