Bulgaria may experience a major delay in receiving its second batch of eight F-16 Block 70 fighters, potentially pushing deliveries from the end of 2027 to the second quarter of 2030. Lockheed Martin cited production difficulties during discussions with Bulgarian defense officials but said the proposed timeline remains subject to change and that it will work to reduce the delay. The possible disruption has encouraged Bulgaria to consider temporary solutions to maintain fighter readiness. Sofia is examining used F-16s and JAS-39 Gripens and has also contacted Poland and Hungary about potential MiG-29 aircraft and spare parts. No final decision has been made on an interim fighter acquisition. Bulgarian defense officials are also evaluating pilot training, spare-parts availability, maintenance, and technical support requirements. Bulgaria purchased its first eight F-16s in 2019 and received its first aircraft in April 2025. The remaining aircraft from that initial order are progressing through integration and are expected to enter operational service in 2027. A second order for eight F-16 Block 70s was placed in 2022 to support the replacement of Bulgaria’s aging MiG-29 fleet.
