Russia has expanded its air defense capabilities with the introduction of the Zubr short-range air defense system, designed to counter emerging airborne threats such as drones and low-flying aircraft. Developed by Rostec, Zubr integrates radar-based surveillance with automated command-and-control functions capable of tracking multiple targets with minimal operator input. The system is optimized for point defense, prioritizing the protection of critical and high-value assets rather than long-range interception. Its automated features are intended to accelerate response times and reduce operator workload, particularly during coordinated drone swarm attacks. Zubr’s architecture includes multiple weapon stations linked to a centralized control hub, allowing synchronized engagement and improved defensive coverage in contested environments.
