Diehl Defence has achieved a major milestone in unmanned combat vehicle development after its Ziesel UGV successfully conducted live launches of Spike LR guided missiles during an intensive multi-day firing exercise. The trials demonstrated the platform’s ability to operate as an autonomous anti-armor system capable of engaging battlefield targets while maintaining structural integrity during repeated missile launches. Developed in collaboration with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and EuroSpike GmbH, the missile-equipped Ziesel combines mobility, stealth, and autonomous navigation capabilities within a compact electric-powered tracked platform. The vehicle supports payloads exceeding 500 kilograms and can perform a range of missions from battlefield resupply to armed reconnaissance and strike operations. Equipped with the PLATON autonomy kit, the UGV can maneuver independently while minimizing exposure to enemy detection and electronic warfare systems. Following the successful tests, the participating companies intend to continue demonstrations and further refine the concept for potential military adoption.
