Northrop Grumman Develops Raid Hunter to Strengthen Short-Range Air DefenseNorthrop Grumman is developing a new gun-based air-defense system aimed at helping military forces respond to increasingly demanding airborne threats.The system, called Raid Hunter Gun-Based Air Defense, combines several technologies, including networked controllers, battle-management systems, Chain Gun technology, and 50mm ammunition.Its design focuses on providing sustained protection against airborne targets. The system uses guided projectiles, a high rate of fire, large ammunition storage, and rapid reload capabilities. Together, these features are intended to provide defensive forces with the ability to continue engaging threats during prolonged operations.The new system is being developed at a time when short-range air defenses are facing increased pressure from evolving airborne threats. Smaller and more numerous aerial systems have created a requirement for defensive solutions that can respond efficiently while conserving more expensive missile interceptors.Raid Hunter’s networked architecture is intended to connect the weapon with controllers and battle-management functions. This allows information about airborne threats to be processed and used to support engagement decisions.The system’s 50mm guided ammunition provides another important feature. Guided projectiles can improve engagement effectiveness while allowing the gun system to maintain a high rate of fire.
