Lockheed Martin Demonstrates Kodiak Launcher in First Live-Fire TrialLockheed Martin has conducted the first live-fire test of its Kodiak containerized launcher, demonstrating a new method of deploying GMLRS precision-fire capabilities from platforms operating on land, in the air, or at sea.The demonstration involved the loading and firing of a Reduced-Range Practice Rocket. The training round is used by HIMARS and M270A2 MLRS crews to practice firing procedures associated with GMLRS and other MLRS Family of Munitions weapons.The test provides an early demonstration of the Kodiak concept, which is designed to make precision fires available to platforms that may not have the space, structure, or configuration required for conventional rocket launchers. Rather than depending on a traditional mobile launcher, the system uses a containerized architecture to package the firing capability into a compact format.Lockheed Martin describes Kodiak as a flexible and cost-effective approach to expanding precision-fire options. The system could allow military forces to integrate rocket-launching capabilities into a wider range of platforms while maintaining a compact operational footprint.Another feature highlighted by the company is the system’s lower-observable profile compared with larger mobile launchers such as HIMARS and M270A2 MLRS. The smaller configuration could provide additional flexibility for forces operating in environments where launcher visibility and mobility are important considerations.Each Kodiak container is designed to hold as many as 12 GMLRS rockets, providing a substantial amount of firepower from a single containerized unit. This configuration could also allow users to scale their precision-fire capability according to mission requirements and available platforms.The Kodiak demonstration follows Lockheed Martin’s recent testing of another containerized weapon system called Grizzly. That system is designed around Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles and is intended to counter attack drones.The two programs demonstrate the company’s broader effort to place different offensive and defensive weapons into containerized architectures. Such systems could offer military forces additional flexibility by allowing weapons to be deployed from platforms that traditionally would not carry dedicated launchers.With the first live-fire test now completed, Kodiak has reached a significant development milestone. Additional trials, platform integration, and operational evaluations will be important in determining how the launcher could eventually support precision-fire missions across different domains.
