Belgian defense manufacturer FN Herstal has introduced the FN MAG Tactical with Long Rail, a modernized version of its widely used 7.62×51mm NATO machine gun designed to better accommodate contemporary battlefield requirements. Rather than altering the weapon’s proven operating system, the company focused on improving ergonomics, modularity, and compatibility with advanced optics. The most significant enhancement is the addition of an extended monolithic top rail that provides ample mounting space for a combination of day, night, and thermal sighting systems while retaining access to traditional iron sights. This feature allows operators to configure the weapon for a wider variety of missions and operational environments. Additional improvements include a redesigned feed cover with ambidextrous controls, an automatic retention mechanism that holds the cover open during loading procedures, and safeguards that protect mounted optics. The upgraded machine gun also features an adjustable tactical buttstock that enables users to optimize weapon fit and sight alignment. Importantly, many of these enhancements can be applied not only to standard FN MAG platforms but also to M240 and L7A2 variants currently used by U.S. and British forces. The modernization reflects the increasing importance of advanced optics and improved user interfaces in modern infantry operations.
