The Netherlands is introducing a new approach to military modernization by developing a unified software ecosystem capable of connecting unmanned systems from multiple manufacturers into a single operational network. Through a multi-year agreement with Dutch technology company Intelic, the Ministry of Defence will develop an advanced command-and-control architecture centered on the NEXUS software platform. Rather than integrating systems after procurement, the project establishes interoperability from the beginning, allowing aerial and ground-based autonomous platforms to share data, coordinate missions, and operate under one command framework. The software-first strategy is expected to simplify integration, accelerate capability deployment, improve operator efficiency, and provide greater flexibility as new unmanned technologies enter military service.
