Japan has signed a deal with Austria’s Palfinger Marine to supply stern launch and recovery systems (Stern-LARS) for its upcoming FFM-class multirole frigates. The agreement covers five new ships scheduled for construction between 2027 and 2036 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Palfinger’s Stern-LARS provides safe deployment and recovery of small boats and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) directly from the stern, eliminating manual handling and reducing operational risks. These systems are designed for single-operator use, enabling faster turnaround and more efficient mission execution. Palfinger previously delivered similar technology for Japan’s 12 Mogami-class frigates, which also were built by MHI. The FFM-class, sometimes referred to as the “shingata” class, is based on the Mogami but features a longer and wider hull to support expanded roles, particularly with unmanned platforms. The hull is extended by 10 meters and widened by 1 meter, offering additional payload and operational flexibility. These enhancements aim to prepare Japan’s navy for emerging maritime challenges, from anti-submarine operations to unmanned warfare integration. The Mogami-class, commissioned in 2022, was built for multi-domain operations, including anti-air, anti-surface, and mine countermeasures. Now, the FFM-class will expand these capabilities while incorporating advanced unmanned systems. Mitsubishi recently launched the 11th Mogami ship, reflecting Tokyo’s accelerated fleet modernization. Palfinger’s involvement ensures continuity and reliability in Japan’s naval modernization.
