The US Navy has awarded Fincantieri Marine Group a $30-million contract to begin the first phase of its Medium Landing Ship program. The award funds long-lead materials and engineering work for the first four vessels, with construction expected to start later this year. The Navy aims to procure up to 35 ships for amphibious transport, logistics support, and near-shore operations. The program uses the Damen LST-100 design selected for its lower risk and faster fielding potential. Each vessel is about 100 meters long, can carry 500,000 kilograms of payload or more than 200 troops, and offers long-range sealift capability.
