PT PAL has entered the pre-production phase for Indonesia’s locally built Scorpene-class submarines, supporting Jakarta’s broader push to modernize its maritime defense industry. The upgraded submarines will use advanced lithium-ion battery systems to enhance underwater performance and reduce maintenance requirements compared to conventional diesel-electric configurations. Indonesian engineers are also receiving specialized training in France as part of the technology transfer partnership with Naval Group. The project positions Indonesia as one of the few Southeast Asian nations capable of domestically producing advanced submarine platforms for future naval operations.
