German defense shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has deepened its engagement with India through new agreements focused on the joint development of naval armaments and anti-submarine warfare technology. These agreements expand TKMS’ participation in India’s broader naval modernization strategy, which has become a priority for the Indian government.
The collaborations also support the “Make in India” initiative, a flagship program introduced in 2014 to encourage local production, cut foreign dependence, and establish India as a global manufacturing hub. By combining German maritime expertise with Indian defense capabilities, the agreements are designed to strengthen both national defense and industrial growth.
One of the key agreements involves a memorandum of understanding with VEM Technologies in Hyderabad for the co-development and upgrading of heavyweight torpedoes. The project will draw technical support from Atlas Elektronik in Bremen, while VEM will oversee local integration and testing efforts. Beyond torpedo development, TKMS is also exploring collaborations linked to India’s P75(I) submarine program and the possibility of creating new production facilities to serve both Indian naval needs and global export markets.
