Leonardo has unveiled the Lionfish 30, a next-generation naval turret featuring advanced automation and artificial intelligence to enhance precision and situational awareness at sea. Developed for the Italian Navy’s modernization program, the remotely operated system employs the company’s proprietary ITAR-free X-GUN — an electrically powered, dual-feed 30×173mm cannon. The weapon system carries over 200 ready rounds distributed between two ammunition boxes and can employ various munitions, including programmable airburst rounds developed with KNDS. Integrated into the Lionfish 30 is the JANUS-D electro-optical director, which combines a high-resolution daylight camera, thermal imager, and laser rangefinder capable of detecting and tracking targets up to 10 kilometers away. This suite enables automatic target recognition and engagement in diverse weather and light conditions. Designed for low maintenance and minimal crew intervention, the turret’s digital architecture supports predictive diagnostics and system health monitoring. Its modular design allows integration on multiple ship classes, from patrol vessels to large frigates. The Lionfish 30 underscores Leonardo’s shift toward AI-enabled naval weaponry emphasizing accuracy, safety, and reduced human workload. The system not only strengthens the Italian Navy’s defense posture but also positions Leonardo as a competitive global supplier of intelligent maritime weapon solutions.
