Indonesia and the United Kingdom have launched a new Maritime Partnership Programme (MPP) under which Indonesia will construct naval and fishing vessels using British technical expertise. Valued at £4 billion, the program was announced during a call between the British Prime Minister and Indonesia’s President. Babcock will take the lead industrial role, with the initiative forming part of the countries’ wider Strategic Partnership agreed in 2024. The MPP includes technology sharing, co-development of advanced shipbuilding techniques, and adoption of artificial intelligence and automation. To support long-term capability development, Babcock will strengthen academic links between UK and Indonesian universities in areas such as naval systems, digital modeling, and engineering. Vessel construction will take place in Indonesia, bolstering domestic shipbuilding while sustaining UK jobs in Rosyth, Bristol, and Devonport. The program supports goals under the UK’s Blue Planet Fund and aligns with Indonesia’s efforts to improve food security and safeguard marine resources across its vast archipelago.
