Sweden has supplied Latvia with the Giraffe 1X air-surveillance radar, significantly strengthening the nation’s capacity to detect, monitor, and respond to airborne threats. The system is already operational within the Latvian Armed Forces and was first used by the air force during the Baltic Zenith 2023 exercises, demonstrating its mobility and rapid setup advantages. Latvia expanded its acquisition in December 2024 with an additional contract for more units, reinforcing its long-term air defense posture. The radar’s performance is a major upgrade for Latvia’s situational awareness. Capable of detecting drones, missiles, rockets, and mortars, it offers a detection range of up to 400 kilometers (248 miles). The lightweight 3D sensor weighs under 150 kilograms (330 pounds), allowing for fast deployment even in austere environments. Its flexibility allows installation on vehicles, ships, or fixed positions, and the self-contained mobile configuration can be assembled by two personnel in under 10 minutes and disassembled in less than five. This unmatched mobility contributes to rapid reaction capabilities. The system is compatible with major transport aircraft—including the C-130 Hercules, A400M, and C-17 Globemaster—and integrates with standard container-handling equipment. Its high-quality data-sharing capability ensures seamless links with command-and-control networks, boosting Latvia’s layered air defense architecture.
