Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland are moving toward formalizing a joint venture dedicated to laser weapon development, with an initial emphasis on naval drone defense systems. Expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2026, the venture will leverage years of collaborative work that has already produced a functioning naval laser demonstrator tested at sea. The system is intended to complement conventional naval air defenses, offering a cost-effective alternative to missile interceptors against drones and other short-range threats. Rheinmetall’s role centers on laser source development and system integration, while MBDA provides sensor fusion, tracking, and command-and-control connectivity. After successful live-fire trials aboard a German frigate and the Bundeswehr’s assumption of the demonstrator in 2025, the partners aim to mature the technology through additional testing. Operational deployment is tentatively targeted for the latter part of the decade, reflecting growing interest in directed-energy weapons within European navies.
