The US Army has advanced its Extended Range Artillery Projectile (ERAP) initiative by awarding development contracts to General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS), General Atomics, and BAE Systems. The program seeks to field a next-generation 155mm artillery projectile capable of significantly extending the reach and effectiveness of existing 39- and 52-caliber artillery systems. Launched in 2024, ERAP aims to achieve initial operational capability by 2030, with low-rate production expected in 2029 and a minimum of 300 rounds planned. GD-OTS received a $37.86-million contract to adapt the Vulcano guided long-range munition, while General Atomics secured $24.84 million for its Long-Range Maneuvering Projectile. BAE Systems was awarded $81.43 million to demonstrate and qualify its Scorpio-XR precision projectile. The effort reflects the Army’s drive to enhance long-range precision fires and maintain battlefield superiority.
