The US Army is seeking industry proposals for a next-generation counter-drone missile capable of defeating small unmanned aircraft at extended ranges while maintaining a target unit cost below $150,000. The proposed Next Generation Counter-Small UAS Missile is intended to engage Group 2 and Group 3 drones faster and farther than existing interceptors. Requirements call for engagement beyond 16 kilometers at an altitude of six kilometers, with an objective range exceeding 25 kilometers at eight kilometers altitude. The weapon is also expected to launch within five seconds of operator command and integrate with the existing Coyote launcher with minimal modifications. The Army plans to procure at least 5,000 interceptors, making affordability a major requirement. The missile is expected to reach Technology Readiness Level 7 following developmental testing by late fiscal 2027, with 50 rounds planned for operational assessment in early fiscal 2028. The initiative reflects growing concern over the cost imbalance between inexpensive drones and expensive defensive interceptors and forms part of wider US efforts to develop scalable, affordable counter-drone weapons.
