Lockheed Martin has achieved another significant milestone in the development of the US Missile Defense Agency’s Next Generation Interceptor by completing a successful burst test of the interceptor’s second-stage motor case. During testing, engineers subjected the carbon-fiber structure to pressures beyond anticipated launch conditions using a reinforced water-filled vessel. The component successfully endured the required stress before failure, confirming its structural integrity and ability to support operational launch demands. The achievement keeps the program aligned with its upcoming critical design review and long-term goal of fielding the interceptor by 2030. Designed to replace the existing Ground-Based Interceptors, the NGI incorporates modular construction, multiple kill vehicles, advanced target discrimination technologies, and digital engineering methods to improve performance while reducing development risks. Manufacturing will take place at Lockheed Martin’s newly established Missile Assembly Building 5 in Alabama, supporting expanded production capacity for future homeland missile defense requirements.
