South Korea is planning a 3.43-trillion-won ($2.43 billion) modernization program for its K2 main battle tanks to improve survivability against emerging threats such as drones and anti-tank weapons. Under the K2 Tank Performance Upgrade Project, the Hyundai Rotem-built tanks will receive active protection systems, counter-drone and improvised explosive device jammers, and remotely operated weapon stations. The program is scheduled to run from 2028 through 2046 as Seoul responds to evolving battlefield requirements and North Korea’s expanding suicide-drone capabilities. The upgrade will also improve the tanks’ ability to withstand attacks from above, where armored vehicles can be particularly vulnerable. Alongside the tank modernization effort, South Korea has approved development of the Haeseong-II, a longer-range domestically produced ship-to-ship missile. The country plans to invest 1.63 trillion won ($1.15 billion) through 2039. With an expected range in the mid-300-kilometer class, Haeseong-II would significantly extend the South Korean Navy’s maritime strike reach compared with the existing Haeseong missile.
