Indonesia’s state-owned defense company PT Pindad has entered a partnership with Germany’s Rheinmetall to co-develop advanced ammunition technologies, marking another step in Jakarta’s push to modernize its defense industry.

The collaboration follows Indonesia’s broader strategy of strengthening defense ties with international partners. Earlier in 2025, Jakarta finalized a deal with France’s Dassault Aviation for Rafale fighter jets.

PT Pindad has also been engaged in multiple technology-transfer projects, including work with Turkey’s FNSS on the Kaplan medium tank and with South Korean and Indian firms on ammunition and vehicle systems.

Meanwhile, PT PAL Indonesia continues to enhance the country’s naval capabilities through joint shipbuilding ventures with Dutch and Japanese shipyards. Together, these initiatives support Indonesia’s Defense Industry Policy objective of achieving greater self-reliance while retaining access to global innovation.
