Lockheed Martin and MAS, the Canadian division of L3Harris, have agreed to expand cooperation to establish an F-35 maintenance depot in Mirabel, Quebec. The initiative supports Canada’s goal of creating domestic sustainment capacity for its future fighter fleet and reducing long-term reliance on overseas service centers. Under the framework, the partners will create a joint executive steering committee responsible for defining facility capabilities, workforce development plans, and long-term maintenance coverage. MAS was previously selected as a strategic partner for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CF-35 program, Canada’s designation for the F-35. Ottawa plans to acquire up to 88 aircraft to replace its aging CF-18 fighter fleet. The Mirabel depot would become a key national asset by supporting fleet readiness, repairs, upgrades, and technical services throughout the aircraft lifecycle. Lockheed Martin and MAS stated that the facility would also connect with a network of roughly 30 Canadian suppliers already involved in the F-35 program. Contributions from these firms are estimated at around $3.2 million per aircraft across the wider global F-35 fleet, which now exceeds 1,300 aircraft. Canada is expected to receive an initial batch of 16 CF-35 fighters by 2026, while officials continue evaluating long-lead procurement items tied to an additional 14 jets. Establishing a domestic depot strengthens sovereign aerospace capability, creates skilled jobs, and positions Canada to support future regional sustainment demand as the F-35 fleet continues to expand internationally.
