Germany has initiated development of an operational high-energy laser weapon system for the German Navy through a partnership between MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall. Building upon extensive sea trials conducted aboard the frigate Sachsen, the program will deliver a fully integrated maritime laser solution incorporating surveillance, target tracking, fire control, and precision engagement capabilities. Designed to complement existing missile and gun systems, the laser weapon provides rapid-response defense against aerial, maritime, and asymmetric threats while reducing engagement costs and expanding layered naval protection. The program also reinforces Germany’s domestic defense-industrial base through localized development and production.
