MBDA Upgrades French Tigre Mk2 With Next-Generation Mistral 3 Air Defense MissileThe French Armed Forces have enhanced the operational capability of the Tigre Mk2 attack helicopter following the successful integration of MBDA’s Mistral 3 air-to-air missile. The modernization involved upgrading the helicopter’s existing Mistral 2 firing system with new software and technical enhancements, allowing it to employ the latest-generation missile without requiring major structural modifications. Conducted jointly by MBDA, the French defense procurement agency (DGA), and the French military, the integration was successfully demonstrated through live-fire testing completed within demanding delivery timelines. Compared with its predecessor, the Mistral 3 offers improved target acquisition through an advanced imaging infrared seeker, greater resistance to decoys and electronic interference, and an operational range extending to 8 kilometers. Designed as a fire-and-forget weapon, the missile carries a 3-kilogram high-explosive warhead and is capable of intercepting low-flying aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other aerial targets at altitudes reaching 6,000 meters. The missile family also supports deployment from ground-based air defense systems and naval platforms, making it suitable for multi-domain operations. The Airbus-built Tigre Mk2 incorporates several survivability and interoperability improvements, including jam-resistant navigation, upgraded ballistic protection, and IFF Mode 5 compatibility. Armed with a 30mm cannon, Hellfire missiles, Mistral missiles, and 68mm rockets, the helicopter now gains an even stronger capability to defend friendly forces against emerging drone threats while maintaining its effectiveness in reconnaissance and precision attack missions.
